Obama decides May Day to be Loyalty Day.. first as tragedy, then as farce

So in a massively and blatantly co-opting and weakening mood:  Obama has no declared the day of a General Strike to be… wait for it.: Loyalty Day.  So International Labor day is to be replaced with an exercise akin (and as meaningless) as Flag Day:

In order to recognize the American spirit of loyalty and the sacrifices that so many have made for our Nation, the Congress, by Public Law 85-529 as amended, has designated May 1 of each year as “Loyalty Day.” On this day, let us reaffirm our allegiance to the United States of America, our Constitution, and our founding values.

This is one of the moments when even the Orwellian  Patriot Act title might be trumped.  While fairly substance-less this is a pissing on labor by Obama, and Obama wonders why his “base” is beginning to lose interest.   Well, I hope this clarifies things for some of you left-liberal hanger-ons as if the NDAA double-speak didn’t wake you up.

  1. I believe this is a long standing practice. Bush did this as well, probably Clinton too.

  2. Do declare may day loyalty day? No. To rename brand holidays, yes. But this is a particularly Orwellian move.

Old as hell. Not quite what proclaiming the formation of holidays that have been so-proclaimed for several decades is bound to accomplish – maybe as a re-affirmation?
In any event, May Day’s storied history is far more deserving of recognition than this, regardless of who signs it into being.

  4. Interesting? why bring up a cold war holiday, proclaim it as if it were new, and move on? At the very least, you’d imagine you’d let it pass over in silence.
